Domaine Les Pins Bourgueil VV 2009 (Loire, France)

Ever since my first trip to Paris, I’ve been in love with Loire Cabernet Franc. I can still recall having lunch outside a cute sidewalk restaurant on a beautiful afternoon and ordering a carafe of their house wine which I later found out was Cabernet Franc from the Loire Valley.

The wine came out chilled and was just the perfect wine for the occasion. To this day, I cannot open a Loire Cab Franc and not think of Paris. It’s a great wine/life memory.

The Les Pins Bourgueil is perhaps different than what many consider typical Loire Cab Franc in that it has some age on it. To the extent most know Loire Cab Franc, they know it as something young and fresh to be drunk early in its life.

But good Cab Franc can age as this modestly-aged wine demonstrates.  Family run for 5 generations, Les Pins makes delicious and affordable wines.

This vielles vignes (old vine) shows retty notes of plum, cranberry, blueberry and baker’s chocolate accented by just a hint of green pepper. It is juicy on the palate but with some nice grip.

It’s a fun wine to drink and it was fun to watch it evolve over the course of the evening.  Again, I prefer the wine with a slight chill. Pair this with just about everything!
